Andrea Christie
Artist Statement
It is my intent to create functional ceramic objects that carry an
ethereal sense of time and dreams mixed with a physical sense of the
hand and the earth. By using the method of hand building I am able
to pursue layering texture and line in the surface of the soft slab.
The sensuous nature of clay is revealed in the subtle beauty of a
seam and the spontaneity of a mark.
The cups and pouring vessels are made from a porcelain or stoneware
body, and the form is constructed using relatively thin slabs of clay.
I choose to use the form of the ewer, teapot and small cup because
of the invitation to touch and the allusion to rituals of shared libation.
Drinking tea, coffee, wine or whiskey with others lends time to share
and relax in a comforting and intimate place.
The cylindrical form of these small cups and teapots holds simple
and symbolic drawings, which relate to the domestic, the familiar
and the incidental. While many of these images are inspired by my
surroundings as a resident of New Orleans, they are ambiguous enough
to allow the viewer to insert his or her own meaning and create a
personal connection to the piece. |
